Vietnam Floods Kill at Least 4, Inundate 16,000 Homes

The Vietnam floods have killed at least four people and inundated more than 16,000 homes after days of heavy rain triggered widespread flooding and landslides across northern and central parts of the country. The flooding followed days of heavy rainfall that affected several provinces, with Thanh Hoa and Ninh Binh among the worst-hit areas. Authorities said floodwaters have continued to cover highways and low-lying communities, disrupting transportation and daily activities.

Vietnam Floods Leave Homes and Communities Underwater

Three members of the same family were killed after a landslide struck a community in Da Bac, Phu Tho province, while a university student in Hanoi was later found dead after reportedly being swept into a drainage system during the flooding. Official figures recorded 16,310 homes inundated as of Thursday, with more than 8,400 of them in Thanh Hoa, nearly 4,800 in Ninh Binh and over 2,200 in Hanoi. The floods have also affected more than 24,000 hectares of crops and aquaculture areas. Authorities have evacuated about 150 families, involving more than 500 people, from low-lying areas. River levels rose and several communities became isolated. Emergency teams have also launched search-and-rescue operations in affected areas.

More Rain and Landslide Warnings Issued

Vietnamese authorities continue to warn of flash floods and landslides in several northern and north-central provinces. These include Phu Tho, Lao Cai, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An. Forecasters expect more heavy rainfall in some areas through September 20. The flooding has also damaged farmland and aquaculture areas, affecting local livelihoods. Emergency workers are assessing the damage in affected communities while authorities monitor river levels and weather conditions. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain cautious as the risk of further flooding continues. Officials have urged residents in flood-prone and low-lying communities to remain alert. They have also advised people to avoid areas with deep or fast-moving water. Authorities are working to restore roads and manage the continuing flood risks.
