US Space Weapons Deployed in Orbit

The United States has confirmed the deployment of US space weapons in Earth’s orbit. It is the first time Washington has publicly acknowledged having offensive weapons in space. US Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink made the disclosure on Monday, September 14, during the Air, Space and Cyber Conference. He said the weapons were necessary to protect US forces against hostile actions in space, but did not reveal when they were deployed or provide details about their capabilities.

US Space Weapons and New Space-Control Capability

According to Meink, the United States now has “on-orbit” weapons designed to defend its forces against potential attacks by adversaries. The US Space Force separately confirmed the existence of the systems but kept their technical details classified. The Space Force describes space control as involving both kinetic and non-kinetic capabilities that can disrupt, degrade or potentially destroy an adversary’s space assets. These could include technologies designed to interfere with satellites or other systems operating in orbit. The announcement comes as the US, China and Russia continue to expand their military capabilities in space. American officials have repeatedly warned about Chinese and Russian programmes targeting satellites. These satellites support communications, navigation and military operations.

What the Deployment Means for Space Security

The disclosure has raised fresh questions about the nature of the US space weapons and their role in protecting American assets in orbit. China criticised the move, warning against turning space into a battlefield, while Russia called for the demilitarization of space. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty prohibits placing nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in orbit. However, it does not impose a general ban on conventional weapons in space. This means the US announcement does not automatically indicate a violation of the treaty. For now, the exact nature of the US weapons remains classified. However, the public confirmation represents a significant development in the militarisation of space. It could also influence how other major powers approach space-based military capabilities.
