LASUTH Doctors’ Strike: NARD Backs Action

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has backed the ongoing strike by resident doctors at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), urging the Lagos State Government to urgently address their grievances. In a statement issued on September 12 and reported by Premium Times on Monday, September 14, NARD expressed solidarity with the Association of Resident Doctors at LASUTH and called on Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the state Ministry of Health to intervene. The association warned that the unresolved dispute was already affecting medical services at the tertiary hospital and could lead to a prolonged disruption of healthcare delivery in Lagos.

What Is Behind the LASUTH Doctors’ Strike?

According to NARD, the doctors are concerned about the non-payment of specialist allowance. The allowance affects Grade Level 14 resident doctors, also known as Senior Registrars 1. The association also listed outstanding salary shortfalls and promotion arrears among the issues yet to be resolved. It further raised concerns over 25 months of arrears linked to the delayed implementation of the revised Professional Allowance Table. NARD also questioned discrepancies in recent salary payments and called for the immediate release of full salary breakdowns to promote transparency. The association said the issues have persisted despite previous acknowledgements and agreements with the Lagos State Government.

NARD Calls for Urgent Government Intervention

NARD said the doctors had remained patient despite the unresolved welfare issues. However, it argued that the continued failure to honour agreements had left them with little choice. The association appealed to the Lagos State Government to address the grievances. It also urged the government to prevent the dispute from developing into a deeper healthcare crisis. The development puts renewed pressure on the state government to engage the affected doctors and find a solution. Disruptions could affect patients who depend on LASUTH for specialist medical care. For now, attention will be on the Lagos State Government’s response to the doctors’ demands. The outcome of negotiations will determine whether the strike ends.
