Nigeria’s AH-1Z Viper helicopters have reached a new stage in production after Bell Textron began production of the aircraft ordered for the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).
The development was announced after a Nigerian delegation visited Bell’s production facility in Amarillo, Texas. Officials observed the assembly line and took part in a ceremony marking Nigeria’s first production aircraft.
The AH-1Z Viper is an attack helicopter built for various military missions, including operations using precision-guided and unguided weapons. Bell said the aircraft can operate from forward facilities while maintaining its capabilities with a smaller logistical footprint.
NAF Delegation Visits Bell Production Facility
During the visit, the Nigerian delegation toured Bell’s Amarillo facility and signed the frame of the first Viper for the Nigerian Air Force.
NAF spokesperson Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame said the aircraft would support Nigeria’s counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations. He also said the Viper will play an important role in the service’s attack helicopter fleet. He cited its capabilities and interoperability.
The visit provides a closer look at progress on a major aircraft procurement. The project has been in development for several years.
Nigeria to Receive 12 AH-1Z Viper Aircraft
Under the contract, Bell is producing and delivering 12 AH-1Z Viper helicopters to Nigeria. The package also includes engineering, programme management and logistics support.
Bell said it expects to complete production of the aircraft by early 2029. For a more active construction, the helicopters will give the Nigerian Air Force another attack platform. The service continues to strengthen its aerial capabilities.
The acquisition forms part of Nigeria’s broader efforts to strengthen its military aviation capabilities. The NAF has continued to expand and upgrade its aircraft fleet as it responds to security challenges across the country.
The production milestone marks another step in defence cooperation between Nigeria and Bell. However, delivery of the Vipers is still ahead as production continues.
