Nigerias formar heads of state, general Yakubu Gowon, has cleared the air on the real reason behind his abolition of regional government in Nigeria, contrary to the the long-held opinion that it was General Aguiyi Ironsi who abolished the regional government in Nigeria.
General Gowon while speaking at Gowon Center in Abuja, explain that the decision was central in addressing the national tension and alleviating the fear of Northern dominance within the federation.
Some revisionists have been turning the history upside down by claiming that Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi is the one that created the unitary government, whereas he left the regional government that are indeed autonomous intact.
He has come out to explain why states was created while abolishing the regional government that recognised the federal government system unlike the state system that gave way to unitary government that we have till date.
He said “it was for this reason that I supported the creation of multiple states to stop any one region becoming too powerful and threatening the country’s unity”
