Peter Obi Sets the Record Straight on Abacha Meeting Allegations!. They were co-opted as private sector actors for Port decongestion
In a bold move to put the rumors to rest, Peter Obi of the Labour Party has finally addressed his much-discussed meeting with the late military dictator, General Sani Abacha — and this time, he’s got proof!
In a comprehensive public letter, Obi shared official documents that reveal he was brought onto a Ports Decongestion Taskforce, working alongside other importers and traders — not politicians — as Nigeria faced significant port inefficiencies during Abacha’s rule.
Peter Obi confirmed he had never met Abacha prior to this meeting.
He approached the military leader not as a politician, but as a concerned businessman advocating for Nigeria’s struggling import sector.
The goal? To tackle the delays in clearing goods at the ports that were crippling businesses and damaging the economy.

He stressed: “Our actions were purely civic, not political.” Obi concluded his statement with a strong message:
“This won’t deter the mischief-makers — but the truth needs to be shared with the public, for future generations and in line with my commitment to transparency for Nigerians.”
With 2027 on the horizon, is this Peter Obi’s strategy to counteract smear campaigns before they take off?
