The only access road to Agu Umabor community in Eha-Alumona, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, has become a nightmare for residents, with an erosion threatening to cut off the road and leave the community isolated.
The erosion that has ravaged the road has made it almost impassable, with Armed herdsmen reportedly taking advantage of the situation to kidnap residents.
The community’s elites have cried out to Governor Peter Mbah and Nsukka LGA Chairman, Mr. Jude Asogwa, to intervene and save the community from disaster.
The Agu Umabor Elites Group, in a statement signed by its president, Mr. Abonyi Gilbert Emeka, and another member, Mr. Ugwuanyi Collins, lamented that the community is being neglected by the government, despite being one of the food baskets of Nsukka local government area.
“The road is not just a path to our community, it’s a lifeline that connects us to the rest of the world. Without it, our farmers will struggle to get their produce to market, and our people will be cut off from essential services.”
The group recalled that they had appealed to the past administration for assistance when the damage to the road was not as severe as it is now, but their pleas fell on deaf ears.
“Now, the situation has become critical, and we are counting on the current administration to come to our rescue.” “Fulani herdsmen are feasting from the road almost on daily basis,” Collins lamented.
“They stationed there to kidnap our people because the road is almost impassable. Now, 2027 election is drawing closer, the politicians will use that road as a campaign manifesto to elicit our support.”
The community’s plea highlights the need for urgent attention to the deplorable state of roads in rural areas, which are often neglected despite being crucial to the livelihoods of rural dwellers.
