Saudi Arabia alerts were issued across parts of the kingdom early Saturday after authorities warned residents of a “hostile aerial threat.” The warnings affected Riyadh, the capital, and nearby Al-Kharj, with residents urged to remain indoors and follow official safety instructions.
The first alert reached residents in Riyadh at about 2:58 a.m. local time through the National Early Warning Platform. The message warned that the area was facing a hostile aerial threat and advised people to stay away from windows and open spaces.
Saudi Arabia Alerts Residents in Riyadh
The warning came as residents reported hearing explosions across parts of Riyadh. AFP journalists in the capital reported hearing two explosions shortly after the alert was issued. The warning was later lifted after Saudi Civil Defence declared that the danger had passed.
Authorities later issued another warning for Riyadh and Al-Kharj at about 5:19 a.m. Civil Defence subsequently announced that the danger was over. Residents were again instructed to follow safety guidance and avoid open areas, windows, balconies and rooftops while the warning remained active.
The alerts followed similar warnings issued in other parts of Saudi Arabia on Friday. Areas affected included Jeddah and Taif in Makkah province, Khamis Mushait in Asir province and AlUla in Madinah province. However, officials did not immediately disclose the specific nature or origin of the threat.
No casualties or damage were initially reported in Riyadh after the warnings were lifted. Saudi authorities also did not immediately confirm what caused the explosions heard by residents.
Alerts Come Amid Rising Yemen Tensions
The latest Saudi Arabia alerts came as fighting involving Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement has intensified.
