A Lagos truck crash has claimed the lives of a mother and her child after two heavily loaded container trucks overturned near Freeman Market at Mile 2, inward Apapa, on Sunday, October 25. The tragic incident prompted an emergency response from traffic management officials as authorities worked to clear the wreckage and restore movement along the busy corridor.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the fatal accident, explaining that the victims became trapped beneath the overturned trucks and their containerised cargo. Both sustained fatal injuries, while their remains were later taken to the Police Mortuary in Yaba for the necessary procedures.
The accident has renewed concerns about the safety risks associated with heavy-duty vehicles transporting large containers through busy urban roads, where a single incident can endanger pedestrians, motorists and other road users.
Lagos Truck Crash Triggers Emergency Response at Mile 2
Following the Lagos truck crash, LASTMA rescue and recovery personnel moved to the scene to manage the situation, secure the affected road and prevent further accidents. Officials temporarily cordoned off the affected section and redirected motorists through an adjoining service lane to reduce congestion while the recovery operation continued.
The agency deployed a crane and a heavy-duty tow vehicle to lift and remove the overturned trucks and their containers from the roadway. Meanwhile, officers of the Nigeria Police Force maintained security at the scene to support the operation and help responders work safely.
The diversion helped traffic officials manage the disruption around Mile 2, an important route for motorists travelling towards Apapa and other parts of Lagos. However, the presence of overturned container trucks required specialised recovery equipment before authorities could complete the clearance exercise.
LASTMA’s response focused on removing the wreckage and reducing the risk of secondary accidents involving approaching vehicles. The deaths of the mother and child, however, underscored the human cost of serious road crashes involving heavy commercial vehicles.
Authorities have not publicly identified the victims in the reports reviewed, and no confirmed information established whether the incident caused additional casualties.
LASTMA Calls for Investigation Into Fatal Truck Accident
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and called on relevant security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The investigation is expected to establish what caused both trucks to overturn and whether mechanical defects, excessive loading, improper cargo distribution, driver negligence or other factors contributed to the tragedy. Authorities have not confirmed any of these possibilities as the cause of the accident.
Bakare-Oki also urged operators of articulated vehicles to prioritise roadworthiness, carry out regular mechanical inspections and secure their containers properly before embarking on journeys. He emphasised that truck operators must comply with established road safety regulations to protect lives and prevent avoidable crashes.
These precautions are particularly important for vehicles transporting heavy cargo through densely populated areas, where an overturned truck can block traffic and expose people nearby to serious danger.
The latest Lagos truck crash also highlights the importance of effective vehicle maintenance and responsible driving among commercial transport operators. Although investigators must establish the precise circumstances of this incident, authorities have stressed that safety checks and proper cargo handling remain essential preventive measures.
Further updates from the relevant authorities may clarify the cause of the accident and provide additional information about the victims. For now, the deaths of the mother and child have left a bereaved family while renewing calls for stronger compliance with road safety standards across Lagos.
