The Abuja police detain 300 operation has placed about 300 people in custody after the Federal Capital Territory Police Command carried out a major security raid on areas identified as potential crime hotspots across the capital. The operation, which took place on Saturday, September 19, targeted locations including shanties, uncompleted buildings and other areas that the police said could serve as hideouts for suspected criminals.
The crackdown forms part of the command’s efforts to prevent criminal activities and improve security across the Federal Capital Territory, particularly in areas where residents have raised concerns about robbery, theft and other forms of street-level crime. Police operations have also focused on tackling “one-chance” activities, in which unsuspecting passengers are allegedly lured into vehicles before being robbed or assaulted.
Abuja Police Detain 300 for Screening
The FCT Police Command said officers are screening and profiling the people taken into custody as they work to establish whether any of them have links to criminal activities or other offences. The police have stressed that the individuals are undergoing screening, meaning that their detention does not automatically establish that they committed a crime.
Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the command would charge anyone found to have committed an offence to court, while police would release anyone cleared during the screening process. The distinction is important because the operation involved the detention of a large number of people, but the police have not stated that all those taken into custody were confirmed criminals.
During the operation, officers reportedly recovered several items, including knives, a toy firearm, cannabis and other substances suspected to be illicit drugs. The recovery of the items formed part of the reasons the police continued screening people found at the locations visited during the operation.
The command said the exercise covered places considered vulnerable to criminal activity, with officers conducting searches and checking individuals found within the targeted locations. The latest crackdown comes as the FCT Police Command continues to use raids and other proactive measures to address security concerns in Abuja. Commissioner of Police CP Ahmed Sanusi said the command would sustain intelligence-led operations, particularly around locations identified as potential criminal hideouts.
The commissioner also cautioned residents against illicit drug use and urged members of the public to support security agencies by providing credible information about suspicious activities. He further directed police officers involved in the operation to maintain professionalism and ensure that their actions remain within the law.
