The Ondo NAF crash has raised environmental and health concerns in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area. Residents have complained about a strong odour near the crash site. They also fear that spilled aviation fuel may have contaminated the river.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has ordered emergency measures to protect the affected community. The state government is also working to address residents’ concerns as recovery operations continue.
Ondo Government Orders Emergency Measures
On Wednesday, October 14, the Ondo State Government ordered fumigation around the affected river. The directive followed complaints about the persistent odour.
Commissioner for Information and Orientation Idowu Ajanaku announced the measures. He said the governor had directed the ministries of environment and health to respond urgently.
The government will also provide nose masks and other essential health supplies. These measures aim to reduce possible health risks among residents.
In addition, the Ilaje Local Government Council must arrange water tankers if tests confirm severe river pollution. This would give residents access to safe drinking water. The arrangement would remain in place until officials find a lasting solution.
The river supports daily activities and livelihoods in Igbokoda. Any contamination could therefore affect households and local businesses.
Residents Demand Cleanup as Recovery Continues
The traditional ruler of Igbokoda, Oba Afolabi Odidiomo, has called for an urgent cleanup. He wants federal and state authorities to speed up recovery efforts.
The monarch raised concerns about the strong odour around the crash site. He also warned about the possible effects of aviation fuel on the river.
Residents fear the suspected pollution could threaten their health. However, environmental experts must assess the water before authorities can confirm contamination.
The aircraft crashed into a swampy area of Igbokoda on October 5, 2026. The incident reportedly killed all 25 people on board. They included five crew members and 20 passengers.
The difficult swamp terrain has complicated recovery efforts. Authorities are also working to recover victims’ remains and remove aircraft debris.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force has established a 12-member board to investigate the crash. The investigation will examine technical, operational and environmental factors.
The Ondo State Government has pledged support for the ongoing response. Residents now need safe water, clear health guidance and an effective cleanup. Authorities must also provide regular updates as the investigation and recovery operation continue.
