At least eight security personnel have been killed following a Zamfara police convoy ambush near Gidan-Giye village in Tsafe Local Government Area. Armed attackers struck the security team on Tuesday, November 3, opening fire on a vehicle carrying police officers and members of a state-backed security outfit. The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of security personnel operating in Nigeria’s North-West, where armed groups continue to carry out attacks and kidnappings.

Local vigilante officials confirmed that the dead included five police officers and three members of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard (CPG). The group supports security operations across the state, particularly efforts to tackle banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities.

According to officials who spoke to Reuters, the attackers targeted a 15-seater bus conveying the security personnel. They reportedly fired repeatedly at the vehicle, destroying it during the assault. However, the full circumstances surrounding the attack remain under investigation.

Zamfara Police Convoy Ambush Leaves Several Officers Injured

Abubakar Isa, a member of the CPG, identified the area near Gidan-Giye village in Tsafe as the location of the attack. Lawal Haruna, a commandant of the local vigilante group, also confirmed the deaths of three CPG members.

Meanwhile, police authorities provided further details about the casualties and the response operation. Police spokesperson Ani Iniedu said security teams recovered the bodies of five deceased officers during search and rescue operations.

The police also rescued seven officers who escaped without injuries, while two others sustained gunshot wounds and received medical attention. These figures came from the police account, while local vigilante officials separately reported the three CPG fatalities.

Furthermore, the attackers reportedly seized five service AK-47 rifles during the ambush. Police said joint security reinforcements had begun searching the surrounding areas to recover the stolen firearms and apprehend those responsible.

The officers were reportedly travelling to Zamfara State for security duties connected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) rerun primary elections. Their assignment placed them on the road when the attackers struck.

Reports also indicated that the gunmen abducted some security personnel and took them to an undisclosed location. However, authorities had yet to confirm the exact number of missing officers or provide details about their whereabouts.

Zamfara Attack Raises Fresh Concerns Over North-West Security

The latest Zamfara police convoy ambush highlights the continuing security challenges facing the state’s rural communities and security formations. Armed groups have repeatedly targeted settlements, travellers and security personnel across the North-West, making several areas vulnerable to violent attacks.

Zamfara remains one of the states dealing with persistent banditry and kidnapping. Armed groups operating in parts of the state have carried out village raids, abducted residents and attacked people travelling along major roads.

These incidents have also placed additional pressure on security agencies, which must protect vulnerable communities while responding to threats across large rural areas. Consequently, the latest attack has drawn attention to the risks facing officers and local security personnel deployed to confront armed groups.

The Zamfara Community Protection Guard plays a supporting role in the state’s security operations. Its members work alongside conventional security agencies to improve local surveillance and assist efforts against criminal groups. Nevertheless, the deaths of three CPG members in the latest incident demonstrate the dangers facing personnel involved in these operations.

Security Teams Begin Search for Attackers and Missing Officers

Following the ambush, police authorities said joint reinforcements were combing the area to recover the stolen rifles and track down the attackers. The operation also comes amid concerns over the whereabouts of personnel reportedly taken away during the incident.

Although the police have confirmed the recovery of five officers’ bodies and the rescue of other personnel, questions remain about the reported abductions. Authorities will also need to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack and determine how many security personnel remain missing.

The Zamfara police convoy ambush adds another incident to the security challenges confronting Nigeria’s North-West. For residents and security personnel in affected communities, the immediate concerns remain the safe recovery of missing officers and the prevention of further attacks.

As security operations continue, further updates from the police and state authorities are expected to provide more information about the investigation and efforts to apprehend those responsible.
