The Federal Government has commenced the distribution of ₦50,000 monthly cash support to vulnerable Nigerians under its National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), with OPay providing a channel through which selected beneficiaries can access the funds.
The development has generated considerable interest among Nigerians, particularly OPay customers who want to know whether they qualify for the intervention and how they can receive the money. The fintech company recently explained that eligible customers would receive a notification on their app homepage, allowing them to follow the instructions required to access the payment.
The government introduced the intervention to provide financial relief to households struggling with rising food prices and the increasing cost of essential goods. It also aims to help vulnerable families manage immediate expenses while the country continues to face economic challenges.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, announced the commencement of the programme on October 30, 2026. He explained that selected beneficiaries would receive ₦50,000 monthly as direct financial assistance.
According to the minister, the government would work with licensed digital financial service providers to ensure that beneficiaries receive their payments securely and conveniently.
How to Check OPay ₦50,000 Cash Support Eligibility
Following growing enquiries from customers, OPay has explained how users can determine whether they have been selected for the Federal Government’s relief programme.
The company said eligible customers would see a pop-up notification on their OPay application homepage. Those who receive the notification should click on it and follow the instructions displayed to proceed with the payment process.
Customers can also check their eligibility by dialling *955*20# through the phone number linked to their OPay account. The USSD service provides another option for customers who may not have access to mobile internet or prefer using their phone dialler.
OPay clarified that it does not determine who qualifies for the government intervention. Instead, the company provides financial services through which approved beneficiaries can receive their funds.
The company also advised customers to contact the NERSI support team on 0700-022-2222 if they need assistance or have questions about their eligibility.
However, customers should understand that having an active OPay account does not automatically qualify them for the payment. The government determines the beneficiaries before approved financial platforms process the disbursements.
Who Qualifies for the Federal Government’s ₦50,000 Support?
The Federal Government selects beneficiaries through existing social protection records rather than an open registration exercise.
Information published on the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction’s official NERSI website states that the government identifies beneficiaries using verified national identity records and the National Social Register.
Authorities then screen the records to identify poor and vulnerable households that need financial assistance.
The programme operates across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, with selection based on need rather than religion, ethnicity or political affiliation. However, not every household will receive the payment during the first phase because the government plans to distribute the funds in batches.
The ministry has also clarified that Nigerians do not need to visit government offices, complete a public application form or pay an agent to secure a place on the beneficiary list.
Other participating financial service providers include ALAT by Wema Bank, MoMo PSB, NairaGram and Moniepoint. Each platform has its own USSD channel through which selected customers can follow the payment instructions.
OPay Warns Customers Against Fraudulent Payment Offers
As interest in the OPay ₦50,000 cash support increases, the possibility of fraudsters taking advantage of unsuspecting Nigerians remains a major concern.
OPay has warned customers against individuals who demand money or request confidential banking information in exchange for assistance with the relief payment.
The company stressed that it would never request a customer’s personal identification number (PIN) or one-time password (OTP) to process a NERSI payment. It also advised users to avoid suspicious links and rely only on its official application and USSD service.
The Federal Government has issued similar warnings, explaining that receiving the support does not require any registration fee or payment to an intermediary.
Beneficiaries will receive an SMS from an approved financial service provider requesting their consent before the money enters their mobile wallets. Customers must follow the instructions in the message before the payment can be completed.
The government has also stated that the full ₦50,000 will go to selected beneficiaries without deductions from the programme itself, although normal withdrawal charges may apply when customers use POS agents.
Meanwhile, Nigerians who have not received notifications should continue to rely on official channels for updates rather than pay individuals claiming they can influence the selection process.
The Federal Government says the intervention will undergo regular reviews based on changes in living costs, while payments will continue in phases to reach selected vulnerable households across the country.
