The Tansian University VC Professor Nnamdi Dike Umeoduagu has died shortly after taking office as the substantive Vice Chancellor of Tansian University in Oba, Anambra State, in a development that has left the institution, his colleagues and members of the wider academic community in mourning.

Umeoduagu formally assumed the position on Friday, October 2, 2026, during an inauguration ceremony held at the university. However, the celebration was followed by tragedy when the professor reportedly became ill later that night.

He died on Saturday, October 3, less than 24 hours after his formal inauguration. The university’s Chief Press Secretary, Fidelis Nwakwesili, confirmed the development, according to reports.

His sudden death has attracted attention because of how shortly it occurred after he formally assumed the substantive position. However, the university has not publicly established the cause of his death.

University Sets Up Committee After Professor’s Death

Tansian University has begun steps to establish the circumstances surrounding Umeoduagu’s sudden death.

The institution set up a five-member committee to look into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The university’s Chancellor and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Very Rev. Fr. Prof. E.S.C. Obiorah, announced the committee during a board meeting.

The panel received a 48-hour deadline to submit its action plan. It will also consider the outcome of an autopsy and make recommendations concerning the university’s role in the funeral arrangements.

The university has indicated that it will support the family’s decision regarding the autopsy. The process is expected to provide more information about what happened before the professor’s death.

For now, the institution has urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation continues. This is particularly important because no official cause of death has been established.

Umeoduagu Had Already Served in Acting Capacity

Although Umeoduagu became the substantive Vice Chancellor on October 2, his appointment did not mark the beginning of his involvement in the university’s top administrative position.

The professor had already served as Acting Vice Chancellor for about two months before his substantive appointment. His acting tenure began after the university’s former substantive Vice Chancellor, Professor Eugene Nwadialor, proceeded on medical leave.

Umeoduagu continued in the acting position until Nwadialor’s tenure ended on September 30, 2026. The university later confirmed him as the substantive Vice Chancellor.

This clarification has become necessary because some early reports suggested that Umeoduagu had only served as Vice Chancellor for a few days. The university explained that he had already spent about two months overseeing the institution in an acting capacity.

His appointment therefore came after a period in which he had already taken on significant administrative responsibilities within the university.

Former Lawmaker Leaves Academic Community in Mourning

Umeoduagu was not known only for his academic career. He also previously served in the Anambra State House of Assembly, where he represented Aguata I Constituency.

His experience in both academia and public service made his death significant beyond the university community. Colleagues, political associates, friends and family members have expressed shock over the sudden development.

The professor also held other leadership responsibilities at Tansian University before becoming its substantive Vice Chancellor. His death has now created another leadership transition for the institution at a time when the university had only recently confirmed him in the top position.

Tansian University has declared a two-week mourning period in his honour. The university has also postponed academic activities during the mourning period and ordered its flag to fly at half-mast.

The measures reflect the impact of his death on the institution, particularly because the university had just formally celebrated his elevation to the substantive Vice Chancellor position.

Investigation Expected To Provide More Answers

The circumstances surrounding Umeoduagu’s death remain under review. The university’s investigation, alongside the expected autopsy findings, could provide further details about the events that preceded his death.

Authorities have not announced a confirmed cause of death, and the university has asked the public to allow the investigation to proceed without speculation.

The sudden passing of the Tansian University VC has left the institution facing an unexpected transition barely a day after his formal inauguration. As the university mourns, attention will now turn to the outcome of the investigation and the arrangements for his final burial.

Further announcements are expected from the university and his family as more details become available.
