The NEC 90-day plan aims to ease the cost-of-living burden on Nigerians through improved food affordability, lower transportation costs and measures to encourage investment across the country. The National Economic Council (NEC) endorsed the proposed economic action plan as the government seeks to turn ongoing reforms into practical benefits for households and businesses.

The decision followed a presentation by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, during the council’s 161st meeting on Thursday, October 22, 2026. Vice-President Kashim Shettima chaired the virtual meeting, which considered ways to improve living conditions and accelerate projects expected to benefit citizens.

According to a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice-President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, the plan was proposed by the Federal Ministry of Finance to consolidate gains from the government’s economic reform programme.

However, the announcement did not provide a detailed implementation schedule or identify specific relief packages that Nigerians would receive during the 90-day period. The impact of the initiative will therefore depend on how quickly the relevant authorities translate the proposed measures into action.

NEC 90-Day Plan Outlines Five Economic Priorities

The NEC 90-day plan identifies five major areas for intervention: food affordability, tax harmonisation, the completion of high-impact projects, the removal of investment bottlenecks and regulated household support.

The council expects these priorities to improve economic opportunities while addressing some of the pressures affecting families and businesses. Better access to affordable food remains particularly important, as household spending on essential goods continues to influence how Nigerians manage their incomes.

Tax harmonisation is another priority, with the broader objective of improving coordination across government and reducing obstacles that affect economic activity. The plan also seeks to accelerate major projects that can provide direct benefits to communities, create employment opportunities and support business growth.

In addition, the council wants authorities to address barriers that discourage investment, while ensuring that household support follows appropriate regulations. The effectiveness of these measures will depend on clear responsibilities, adequate funding and cooperation between federal and state governments.

Council Approves Dashboard to Track Government Projects

As part of its decisions, NEC approved the establishment of a national dashboard to monitor ongoing projects across the federation, with particular attention to transparency, accountability and the use of funds saved from petrol subsidy removal.

The proposed platform is expected to improve public oversight by making it easier to track project implementation and assess how government resources support development priorities. It could also help identify delays and strengthen accountability among institutions responsible for delivering public projects.

The council’s emphasis on monitoring reflects the importance of ensuring that economic policies produce measurable results rather than remaining announcements without clear benefits for citizens.

Speaking during the meeting, Shettima urged governors and relevant government institutions to ensure that the gains of economic reforms translate into better living conditions. He highlighted affordable transportation, accessible healthcare, employment opportunities and greater financial security as important measures of progress.

NEC Targets Lower Transport Fares Through CNG Initiative

Beyond the broader economic plan, NEC resolved to establish a joint financing framework between the Federal Government and state governments to accelerate the deployment of compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles.

The initiative seeks to support more affordable transportation and reduce the financial pressure commuters face when travelling to work, school and other essential destinations. However, expanding the use of alternative-energy vehicles alone may not guarantee cheaper fares without effective implementation and cooperation from transport operators.

The council therefore directed relevant authorities to engage transport unions and operators to ensure that savings from adopting CNG and electric vehicles reach passengers through lower fares.

NEC also agreed to establish a committee to coordinate the proposed financing arrangement, consult stakeholders and develop practical measures for implementation. The committee is expected to help ensure that the programme delivers accessible and sustainable transportation options.

Implementation Will Determine the Plan’s Impact

The NEC 90-day plan represents another attempt to connect economic reforms with the everyday needs of Nigerians, particularly households facing pressure from food, transportation and other essential expenses.

Nevertheless, the council’s endorsement does not mean that prices have already fallen or that financial assistance has reached households. Nigerians will need further information about the implementation timetable, funding arrangements and the specific measures government agencies intend to introduce.

The next stage will require coordinated action from federal authorities, state governments and relevant institutions to ensure that the proposed interventions produce tangible results.

For households and businesses, the central concern remains whether the initiative will deliver meaningful relief within the proposed period. Its success will ultimately depend on whether Nigerians experience measurable improvements in affordability, access to essential services and economic opportunities.
