President Bola Tinubu is set to travel to Makkah, Saudi Arabia, on Thursday, October 29, to perform Umrah and seek divine guidance for Nigeria as he prays for the country’s peace, unity, stability and continued progress. The Presidency announced the Tinubu Umrah trip on Wednesday, October 28, while confirming that the President would commission newly acquired Nigerian Air Force equipment before leaving Abuja.

Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, disclosed the planned journey in a statement issued by the Presidency. He explained that the visit would give Tinubu an opportunity for spiritual reflection, devotion and prayers for Nigeria and its citizens.

The announcement outlined two major activities surrounding the trip: the commissioning of equipment acquired by the Nigerian Air Force and the President’s planned religious activities in Makkah. The Presidency also stated that Tinubu would return to Nigeria the following week after completing the pilgrimage.

Tinubu Umrah Trip to Focus on Nigeria’s Peace and Stability

According to the Presidency, Tinubu will perform the religious rites associated with Umrah during his stay in Makkah, one of Islam’s holiest cities, where Muslims travel to worship and seek spiritual fulfilment.

The President intends to pray for Nigeria’s peace, unity, stability and continued progress, while seeking Allah’s guidance and blessings for the country and its people. The Presidency described the visit as an opportunity for spiritual reflection and devotion, although it did not announce any additional engagements during his stay in Saudi Arabia.

Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage that Muslims can undertake at different times of the year. It involves specific religious rites in Makkah and differs from Hajj, which takes place during a designated period in the Islamic calendar and is one of the five pillars of Islam.

Unlike Hajj, Muslims do not have to wait for a particular annual period to perform Umrah, making it possible to undertake the pilgrimage throughout the year, subject to travel arrangements and applicable requirements.

The Tinubu Umrah trip comes as the President continues to lead the Federal Government amid various national issues, including security concerns and economic pressures affecting households and businesses across the country. However, the Presidency’s statement focused on the spiritual purpose of the visit and did not connect the pilgrimage to any specific government policy or decision.

Tinubu to Commission Nigerian Air Force Equipment in Abuja

Before departing for Saudi Arabia, Tinubu is scheduled to commission equipment acquired by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to support its operations. The ceremony will take place at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

Onanuga confirmed the planned commissioning in the same statement announcing the President’s journey to Makkah. However, the Presidency did not identify the equipment, disclose the number of items involved or provide technical details about their capabilities.

The announcement also did not explain when the Air Force would deploy the equipment or specify the operational duties it would perform. Further information from the relevant authorities would be needed to establish those details.

The Nigerian Air Force plays a role in the country’s defence operations through air missions and other military activities. Its operational responsibilities include supporting efforts to address security threats, depending on the mission and equipment available.

The planned ceremony will allow Tinubu to formally commission the newly acquired equipment before beginning his journey. However, the announcement alone does not establish whether the equipment has already entered operational service or when personnel will begin using it.

Presidency Expects Tinubu to Return Next Week

The Presidency expects Tinubu to return to Nigeria next week after completing his religious activities in Makkah. Onanuga confirmed the expected return period in the October 28 statement but did not provide a specific date for the President’s arrival.

The announcement also did not disclose the precise duration of the pilgrimage or identify any meetings with Saudi officials that might take place during the visit. Therefore, the confirmed purpose of the trip remains the performance of Umrah and prayers for Nigeria’s peace, unity, stability and progress.

The President’s planned departure and return arrangements will determine when he resumes his activities in Nigeria following the spiritual exercise.

The Presidency issued the announcement ahead of the scheduled departure on Thursday, October 29, providing details of the planned pilgrimage and the Air Force equipment commissioning in Abuja.
