The decision by the Lagos State Police Command to detain four officers and disband their tactical team has brought police accountability back into focus after a video allegedly showed officers harassing a young man in Ikorodu.
The command announced the action after investigating the footage, which circulated online and drew public attention. Police spokesperson Superintendent of Police Abimbola Adebisi said investigators identified the officers as members of the command’s tactical team operating in the Odogunyan area.
According to Nigeria Info FM, Adebisi disclosed the development on Friday, October 23. She said the officers were summoned to the office of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, where senior officials decided to detain them pending disciplinary proceedings.
The command also ordered the disbandment of the entire team. However, the investigation remains ongoing, and the police have yet to announce a final decision on the officers’ cases.
Lagos Police Detain Four Officers After Investigating Viral Footage
The investigation began after the command received the video showing an encounter between police officers and a young man in Odogunyan, Ikorodu.
Adebisi said the police acted after receiving the footage. Investigators identified the personnel involved and traced them to the tactical team attached to the Lagos State Police Command.
The command then summoned the officers to the commissioner’s office for further inquiries. Following the meeting, officials ordered their immediate detention while disciplinary proceedings continued.
Adebisi confirmed that all four officers were in custody. However, only three appeared during the briefing at the command headquarters. She explained that the fourth officer was also being held, although he was not presented alongside the others.
The spokesperson assured residents that the command would take appropriate action against any officer found responsible for misconduct. She also stressed that the police leadership would not tolerate actions that violate established directives.
Although the video prompted the investigation, the command has not announced its final findings. The allegations must therefore remain distinct from any conclusions reached through the disciplinary process.

Adebisi reiterated the command’s expectation that officers should perform their duties with integrity, humility and professionalism. She also urged residents to report personnel who act contrary to established police rules and directives.
The command maintained that officers who abuse their authority should face appropriate consequences if investigators find them culpable. It also commended members of the public for helping identify the personnel involved in the video.
