We didn’t share Emefiele’s N54bn assets  – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has refuted claims that it distributed N54 billion from the confiscated assets of Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

In a statement on Wednesday, Dele Oyewale, the spokesperson for the EFCC, dismissed the allegations as childish and emphasized that no member of the commission was involved in the distribution of the confiscated assets. He further stated that the EFCC Act 2004 and the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act 2022 do not allow for the “sharing” of forfeited assets.

The EFCC categorically refutes the claim made by Sahara Reporters that N54 billion, which was seized from associates of former CBN governor Mr. Godwin Emefiele, was distributed among specific ministers, President Bola Tinubu’s aides, and EFCC officials.

“None of the officials from the Commission have been implicated in the distribution of any confiscated asset proceeds.” The Commission finds the concept of ‘sharing of proceeds of forfeited assets’ unfamiliar.

“The report, which was seemingly intended to scandalize the mentioned agencies, reveals the author’s lack of knowledge about the current framework for recovering and managing assets.” There is currently no established system or framework for the sharing of forfeited assets, and the concept itself is considered immature or underdeveloped.

“In reality, it unequivocally did not occur!” Disseminating fictional information to the public and presenting it as news is an extremely irresponsible act. The EFCC will not allow any efforts to tarnish its well-established reputation.
