Russian air strikes on Kyiv have killed one person and injured two others after overnight attacks targeted several parts of the Ukrainian capital. The attacks damaged a 25-storey residential building, struck the Southern Bridge over the Dnipro River and disrupted transport across the city. Kyiv authorities responded by closing major bridges and redirecting public transport as emergency teams assessed the damage.
The strikes occurred during the night of October 1 and into the early hours of October 2, following another series of Russian drone attacks on Kyiv on Thursday. Ukrainian officials said the latest assault caused damage in several districts, while emergency workers responded to fires and debris from the attacks.
Russian Air Strikes Damage Residential Building
One of the most serious incidents occurred in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district, where a Russian strike damaged a 25-storey residential building. The attack caused a fire in the building, prompting emergency crews to move into the area and begin rescue operations.
One person died in the attack, while two others suffered injuries, according to local authorities. Emergency workers also evacuated residents from the damaged building as they checked the structure and surrounding area for additional dangers.
The strike caused damage beyond the residential building, with debris falling in other parts of Kyiv. Officials reported damage to windows at a non-residential building and several vehicles in the Holosiivskyi district. Emergency services continued to inspect affected areas as authorities worked to establish the full scale of the overnight attack.
The latest assault followed attacks on Kyiv earlier on October 1. Russian drones struck a school and the Southern Bridge during those attacks, creating fires and disrupting transport. More than 100 students were reportedly sheltering when the school came under attack, and the incident did not result in reported student casualties.
The repeated attacks have increased pressure on Kyiv’s emergency services, which must respond quickly to fires, damaged buildings and other consequences after each strike. Residents have also continued to rely on air-raid warnings and shelters as Russian attacks remain a regular threat to the capital.
Bridges Closed After Attacks on Kyiv
The Russian air strikes also created major transportation problems after drones struck the Southern Bridge, an important crossing over the Dnipro River. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed another strike on the bridge during the night, while emergency services moved to the area to assess the situation.
Following the attack, authorities closed the Southern Bridge to traffic in both directions. Officials also restricted movement on the Paton Bridge and introduced restrictions on the Metro Bridge as they worked to manage traffic and assess safety conditions.
The bridge restrictions affected several public transport routes across Kyiv. Authorities redirected buses and trolleybuses through alternative crossings, including the Darnytskyi Bridge, to keep commuters moving between the two sides of the city. The changes created additional pressure on the transport network during the morning rush.
By Friday morning, officials had started restoring some public transport services across the Paton Bridge. Several buses resumed journeys towards Kyiv’s right bank, although authorities continued to direct traffic towards the Darnytskyi Bridge in the opposite direction. The Southern Bridge remained fully closed to road traffic as officials continued their assessment.
The attacks come during an intense period of Russian strikes across Ukraine. Russian forces have increasingly used drones to target infrastructure and other locations, while Ukrainian authorities continue to strengthen their air-defence response.
Russia has said its forces target military and strategic infrastructure rather than civilians. Ukrainian officials, however, continue to report damage to residential buildings, schools, transport infrastructure and other civilian areas following Russian attacks.
As Kyiv deals with the aftermath of the latest strikes, emergency crews remain focused on assessing damaged structures and maintaining public safety. Authorities have also urged residents to follow official warnings and take shelter whenever air-raid alerts are issued.
The latest attack highlights the continued disruption that Russian strikes can cause in Kyiv, where damage to bridges and other infrastructure can affect thousands of residents even when the immediate casualties remain limited. With emergency and transport services still responding to the overnight assault, authorities continue to monitor the situation across the capital.
