Fresh Port Harcourt flooding has affected several communities in Rivers State following heavy rainfall, with roads, homes, business premises, farmlands and other properties submerged across parts of Port Harcourt and the neighbouring Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
The latest flooding has created difficulties for residents, motorists and pedestrians who are trying to move through affected communities, while some residential areas and businesses have also had to contend with rising water levels.
According to a report by The Nation published on Sunday, September 27, floodwaters covered drainage channels and sections of Odili Road in Port Harcourt, making it difficult for motorists and pedestrians to identify safe routes into adjoining streets and residential areas. Similar conditions were reported in several other locations, highlighting the continuing disruption caused by heavy rainfall across parts of the Rivers State capital.
Port Harcourt Flooding Disrupts Roads, Homes and Businesses
The flooding has affected communities around Army Range, Rumuachorlu and Avuha Estate in Eneka, Obio/Akpor, where residents have reported water covering roads, residential properties, farmlands and business premises.
In some areas, the rising water has gone beyond major roads and entered compounds and other private spaces, increasing concerns among residents who are monitoring the situation and trying to protect their belongings from further damage.
At Avuha Estate, resident Anthony Ufoha said floodwater had already submerged his compound and garden, although the water had not entered his house at the time of the report. The situation has nevertheless added to concerns among residents in areas where continued rainfall could lead to further accumulation of water.
The effects have also extended to places of worship and other community activities. In the Uyo Street area of Rumuomasi, some churches reportedly moved their services online, while others relocated their meetings to hotels and alternative venues because of the flooding.
The disruption to movement is particularly significant because several of the affected locations serve residential and commercial communities, meaning that continued flooding can make it more difficult for people to reach their homes, workplaces, schools, markets and other destinations.
Residents Raise Concerns Over Drainage
Beyond the immediate impact of the rainfall, residents in some communities have raised concerns about drainage and the movement of floodwater around developing areas.
In Rumuowha, residents expressed concerns about drainage arrangements connected to the construction of the Governor Siminalayi Fubara Ring Road project. They alleged that water from surrounding areas was being channelled into their community and called on the authorities to examine the situation and address any drainage problems contributing to the flooding.
The concerns come as Rivers State continues to deal with flooding in different parts of the state, with government officials previously identifying blocked drainage channels and other factors as issues that residents and developers need to address.
On September 19, the Rivers State Government announced the distribution of relief materials to people affected by flooding in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor. The government said the intervention included food and non-food items, while vulnerable flood victims were also being considered for access to free healthcare through the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme.
The state government also said it was working with the National Emergency Management Agency and had directed the Ministry of Environment to assess the underlying causes of flooding in affected areas and develop sustainable solutions. Officials further appealed to residents to avoid dumping waste in gutters and waterways, while developers were urged not to block drainage channels with buildings or other structures.
The latest Port Harcourt flooding therefore comes against the background of an ongoing response to flood-affected communities, with authorities already providing relief while residents continue to deal with the effects of heavy rainfall.
As rainfall continues, residents in flood-prone communities are expected to remain cautious, particularly when travelling through roads and areas where water has accumulated.
