The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to take urgent action. Following the increase, petrol prices have reached around ₦1,430 to ₦1,500 per litre in parts of the country.
Meanwhile, the latest increase has renewed concerns over the rising cost of living. Labour warned that higher fuel prices could place additional pressure on transportation, food prices and other essential expenses for Nigerians.
NLC Petrol Price Rise Prompts Labour Demands
NLC President Joe Ajaero said the government needs to take immediate measures to cushion the impact of rising petrol prices on workers and households.
Among the measures demanded by the labour union are wage awards for workers, adequate crude oil supply to local refineries in naira and an expansion of petroleum storage capacity across the country.
The NLC argued that continued increases in the price of petrol could further raise transportation costs, which would have a wider effect on the prices of goods and services.
The development follows a petrol price increase by the Dangote Refinery. The refinery raised its gantry price from ₦1,265 to ₦1,350 per litre on September 12. This represents an ₦85 increase.
Petrol Prices Continue to Rise
Following the refinery’s adjustment, petrol prices have risen at several filling stations. Reports put pump prices at about ₦1,415 to ₦1,450 per litre in Abuja and neighbouring areas.
