Nigeria’s police are preparing to enlist and train 50 repentant thugs in Kano State to become constables.

Over 50 repentant thugs in Kano were trained and converted into police special constabulary by the Kano State Police Command.

Usaini Gumel, the state Commissioner of Police, addressed the repentant thugs at a ceremony held at Sani Abacha Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Nigeria Police Special Constabulary members were drawn from various local governments in Kano State after completing two-month training.

Kano state and police command have successfully passed out 50 youths from 222 repentant thugs who have surrendered and pledged never to engage in thuggery or other social vices.

Three months ago, the Command invited notorious individuals suspected of escalating thuggery and other crimes in the state for dialogue.

The source claimed that the state government obtained the names of 222 thugs who had changed their ways. The details of the individuals were forwarded to the state Governor for support through life-changing programs.

Out of the total, 50 individuals volunteered to work with the police and contribute to the security and development of the state. We trained them in classes and the field, recognizing their commitment to ensuring peace in the state since their repentance, and subsequently commissioned them as members of the Special Constabulary.

The security of Kano has been prioritized by the individuals, who are committed to maintaining peace and preventing any insecurity elements from posing a threat.

The commissioner lauded the supervising officers of the Command for their dedicated efforts in battling crime and advised them to keep communicating with important players in their particular regions.

The CP instructed officers to collaborate with Police Special Constabulary members in their communities to effectively carry out their duties.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf expressed gratitude for the repentance of the people and pledged to provide them with skills acquisition programs.

Kano is implementing a non-kinetic approach to combat crime, aligning with the administration’s goal of fostering development, peace, order, and economic prosperity.
