NFF Normalisation Committee Set to Lead Nigerian Football Until 2027

FIFA has approved the appointment of an NFF normalisation committee to oversee the affairs of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) while the country prepares for fresh elections into the federation’s Executive Committee, marking a significant step towards resolving the leadership uncertainty that has affected the administration of Nigerian football. The committee’s members will be jointly appointed by FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), while its mandate must end once its assigned responsibilities are completed and no later than May 31, 2027.

The decision was communicated in a letter signed by FIFA Secretary-General Mattias Grafström and addressed to the NFF’s acting General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme. According to the federation’s announcement, the committee will comprise a suitable number of members, although their identities have not yet been publicly confirmed.

The arrangement is expected to provide temporary administrative leadership while the federation works towards restoring an elected executive structure and addressing the issues that led to the current leadership transition.

FIFA and CAF to Appoint Committee Members

Under the approved arrangement, FIFA and CAF will jointly select the individuals who will serve on the committee, with the appointment expected to take place as soon as possible. The joint process places both international football governing bodies at the centre of the transition, particularly as the NFF works towards organising fresh elections.

One important condition attached to the appointment is that members of the NFF normalisation committee will not be eligible to contest any of the positions available in the forthcoming elections. The restriction separates their temporary administrative responsibilities from the process of choosing the federation’s next elected leadership.

However, FIFA has not yet publicly disclosed the committee’s membership or the full details of its operational arrangements. Further announcements are therefore expected to clarify the individuals selected, the scope of their responsibilities and the steps they must complete before the end of their tenure.

The committee’s work will be particularly important because the transition involves more than filling an immediate leadership gap. The federation must also establish a clear route towards fresh elections and ensure that its administration can continue while the process unfolds.

In the meantime, the NFF Secretariat will retain responsibility for the federation’s day-to-day operations and the administration of football in Nigeria until the newly appointed committee takes over.

Leadership Crisis Behind FIFA’s Intervention

The decision follows a major leadership crisis at the NFF in August 2026, when former president Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the federation’s Executive Committee resigned, creating uncertainty over the organisation’s leadership and disrupting preparations for its electoral process.

The resignations came during a difficult period for Nigerian football, with concerns surrounding the performance of the country’s national teams adding to pressure on the federation’s administration. Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup also formed part of the wider context surrounding calls for changes in the management of the sport.

Following the departures, interim officials were put in place to maintain administrative continuity while consultations involving Nigerian football authorities and international governing bodies continued.

President Bola Tinubu also called for comprehensive reforms in Nigerian football, with the National Sports Commission expected to work with relevant stakeholders and engage FIFA and CAF on the process. The discussions focused on the need to strengthen governance, improve administration and establish a workable path forward for the federation.

FIFA’s approval of the normalisation committee represents a further step in those efforts, although the practical impact of the arrangement will depend on how effectively the appointed members carry out their responsibilities.

May 2027 Deadline for Fresh Elections

The NFF normalisation committee will remain in office only for as long as necessary to complete its assigned tasks, with May 31, 2027, established as the latest date for its mandate to end. This means the committee is expected to oversee the transition within a defined period rather than serve as a permanent replacement for an elected executive.

Fresh elections into the NFF Executive Committee remain central to the arrangement, as the process is intended to return the federation to elected leadership after the interim administration has completed its work.

Nevertheless, the timeline alone does not establish the exact date on which the elections will take place. FIFA and CAF are yet to announce the committee’s membership, and further details will be needed to understand the timetable and procedures for completing the transition.

Football stakeholders will therefore be watching for the next official announcements, particularly those explaining the committee’s responsibilities and the arrangements for the forthcoming elections.

For Nigerian football, the immediate priority will be maintaining the administration of the game while providing a credible route towards stable leadership. The success of the intervention will ultimately depend on the committee’s ability to complete its assigned tasks within the approved timeframe and support the return of an elected NFF Executive Committee.

Until the members are formally appointed and their detailed mandate is made public, the full scope of the committee’s work remains to be clarified. However, FIFA’s decision establishes the framework for the next phase of the federation’s leadership transition, with May 31, 2027, serving as the final deadline for the committee to complete its responsibilities.
