The Flydubai flight incident has drawn international attention after a co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain during a Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight, sending the aircraft into a rapid descent before passengers and crew members helped bring the emergency under control.
Flydubai flight FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30, 2026, when the confrontation began inside the cockpit. The Boeing 737 was carrying more than 170 people, and the aircraft was flying over the region when its altitude suddenly began to fall.
The captain suffered injuries during the confrontation but managed to open the cockpit door, giving passengers and crew members an opportunity to intervene. Two other Flydubai pilots were also travelling on the aircraft and later helped take control of the plane.
The crew eventually diverted the aircraft to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely after a serious in-flight emergency.
Flydubai Flight Incident Sends Aircraft Into Rapid Descent
The Flydubai flight incident began when the first officer allegedly attacked Captain Smit Machchhar inside the cockpit. Saudi authorities later confirmed in their preliminary investigation that the first officer assaulted the captain during the flight.
The confrontation quickly created a dangerous situation because the aircraft continued flying while the pilots struggled inside the cockpit. Reuters reported that the plane plunged more than 16,000 feet in about 30 seconds after cruising at around 34,000 feet. Flight data also showed a series of unusual movements as the emergency unfolded.
The rapid descent caused alarm among passengers, many of whom initially believed the aircraft had encountered severe turbulence. As the situation became clearer, several passengers and crew members moved towards the cockpit.
The injured captain managed to unlock the cockpit door despite his wounds. This gave passengers access to the flight deck, where they helped overpower the co-pilot and prevent further interference with the aircraft.
Two reserve Flydubai pilots were also among the passengers. They assisted the crew and eventually helped regain control of the aircraft. The plane then diverted towards Tabuk instead of continuing to Tel Aviv.
The aircraft landed safely at Tabuk airport, bringing the immediate danger to an end. The passengers later continued their journey to Israel on a replacement flight.
Investigation Into Flydubai Flight Incident Continues
Authorities in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Israel are now investigating the Flydubai flight incident to establish exactly what happened inside the cockpit and what caused the confrontation.
The UAE has launched a formal investigation and will examine the circumstances, possible motives and whether anyone planned or directed the incident. Authorities have also said they will investigate whether the event had any connection to terrorist activity.
Saudi authorities initially questioned the co-pilot after the aircraft landed in Tabuk. The pilots were later transferred to the UAE, where the investigation continued.
Israeli officials are also expected to question the co-pilot as investigators gather more information about the incident. Reuters reported on October 2 that the investigation remains focused on understanding the events that led to the attack and the aircraft’s dramatic descent.
Some Israeli officials have described the incident as an apparent attempt to crash the aircraft, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made claims about the co-pilot’s background and possible radicalisation. However, authorities have not established a final motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Flydubai has urged people to avoid premature speculation while investigators establish the facts. The airline has also suspended flights between the UAE and Israel following the incident.
Captain Machchhar is recovering from his injuries in the UAE. He has since spoken about the incident and described how he managed to open the cockpit door despite being injured.
The Flydubai flight incident ended without a crash because the captain, passengers, crew members and other pilots managed to intervene during the emergency. Investigators will now examine the flight data, cockpit events and actions of those involved to determine exactly how the crisis developed and whether further security measures are necessary.
The incident has also renewed questions about aviation security and the systems airlines use to identify and manage risks involving flight crew, particularly because the alleged attacker was a member of the aircraft’s own operating crew.
