FCT security has been heightened across Abuja as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, with the Federal Capital Territory Police Command increasing deployments and visibility patrols to protect residents, visitors and public facilities during the celebrations.
The security measures were announced by the police as part of efforts to maintain law and order across the territory. More officers have been deployed to strategic locations, while patrol teams have been positioned in different parts of the capital to respond to security concerns and discourage criminal activities.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, gave the assurance in a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, on October 1, 2026. Sanusi congratulated residents on the Independence anniversary and called for a peaceful celebration across the territory.
The commissioner also warned criminal elements against using the festivities as an opportunity to commit crimes. According to the police, the FCT would not become a convenient environment for criminal activities, while anyone found engaging in unlawful acts would face arrest and prosecution.
Police Increase Patrols Across the FCT
The increased police presence is expected to cover strategic areas across Abuja, particularly locations where large numbers of people may gather during the celebration. Visibility patrols have also been increased as part of efforts to detect suspicious activities and respond quickly to incidents.
Residents have been encouraged to remain alert while moving around the city. The police have also asked members of the public to report suspicious movements or activities that could pose a security threat.
People who require urgent police assistance can contact the FCT Police Command through 08032003913 or 08028940883.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has also strengthened security operations across the territory. The FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, ordered the deployment of 3,000 personnel ahead of the Independence celebrations.
According to the NSCDC, the personnel have been deployed to areas considered vulnerable or likely to attract large crowds. Markets, motor parks, shopping malls, recreational centres and amusement parks are among the locations being covered.
Critical national assets and infrastructure are also receiving additional protection. The NSCDC said specialised units, including its counter-terrorism, CBRNE, Agro Rangers and Female Strike Force units, were included in the deployment.
NSCDC Deploys 3,000 Personnel Across Abuja
Covert surveillance operations have also been activated in different parts of the FCT. Security personnel are monitoring areas that could be used by criminals, including uncompleted buildings identified as possible hideouts.
The NSCDC has directed its area commanders and divisional officers to maintain a strong presence within their respective areas and work closely with other security agencies. Personnel have also been instructed to maintain discipline and respect the rights of residents while carrying out their duties.
The command warned criminals and vandals against targeting critical national assets and infrastructure. It said patrol teams and covert officers were already operating across the city to prevent security breaches.
With the Independence celebrations underway, security agencies will continue operations across Abuja. Residents and visitors are expected to cooperate with security personnel and follow safety guidelines.
The police and NSCDC have both urged the public to remain vigilant and provide useful information that can assist security agencies. The increased deployments are expected to help maintain a peaceful environment across the FCT during and after the Independence celebrations.
